What is the process to obtain a heavy vehicle license?
The applicant must perform at the SAAQ a visual test, a medical examination and a theoretical examination in order to obtain a learner’s permit. One or three months, depending on the age, after the acquirement of that learner’s permit, a practical examination concerning the inspection of the vehicle and its control might be performed. The applicant must have been holding a class 5 permit (passenger vehicle) for at least three years in order to acquire the class 1 (trailer trucks) or two years for the class 2 and 3 (respectively bus and straight body trucks). He must not have more than 3 demerit points registered on his driver’s record and must not have had any suspension or revocation for at least two years.
If these conditions are fulfilled, the first step would be to ask, in one of the SAAQ offices, for a M28 medical form in order to make it fill by a family practitioner. This process might take some time, because it is necessary to obtain an appointment at the medic, to bring back the filled form at the SAAQ and to wait for their agreement before being allowed to perform the theoretical examination.
